Ethiopia like other developing countries is experiencing a rise in the incidence of cancer, late presentation and high mortality rate. Since more than 30% of all cancers are related to infection and other environmental hazards in developing countries, Ethiopian Society of Hematology and Oncology (ESHO) aim to raise awareness in the public on the importance of preventive approaches. As oncology professionals, we must educate the public to minimize the risk of cancer. Finally, the importance of research in cancer care is of paramount importance, and we have to give due emphasis.
ESHO intends to provide a strong platform for advocacy, awareness and learning. We want to create an environment in which cancer providers are empowered and encouraged to adopt patient-centric approaches based on contextual research and best practice. We appreciate that the government has been taking necessary actions and devise policies for the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), especially cancers; we will play a role in the practicality of this endeavor. ESHO is starting on a long journey to change oncology service in Ethiopia. We look forward to see all stakeholders joining us on this journey.
Thank you! Sincerely
